NYIRAGONGO SUMMIT HUTS
This is a totally unique, dream destination for the intrepid traveller. Experience sleeping on the rim of an active volcano and gazing down into the bubbling mosaic of molten magma in one of the largest lava lakes on the planet. Located on the outskirts of Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano, but don’t let this put you off – its eruptions are highly predictable, making it safe to climb. The sheer magnificence of the experience will be hard to beat anywhere else on earth.
ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES
Accommodation is very basic but will keep you dry and snug for the night. Twelve small A-frame huts cling to the upper slopes of the crater rim, each with two simple single beds with foam mattresses on which to lay your sleeping bag. A shared ‘long drop’ lavatory is reached by a safety rope (due to the slope being quite steep) a little further downhill, making trips to the bathroom quite an experience! There is no running water or electricity, so don’t forget a torch, and cosy clothes are a must. If you can tear your eyes away from the mesmerising cauldron of fire deep inside the crater, your personal chef will prepare a hearty and warming meal for you to enjoy around a campfire.
GEOGRAPHY
From Goma, it is around a thirty-minute drive to reach the start of the Mount Nyiragongo trail. The walk to the top is not that far – only eight kilometres – but is steep, so depending on fitness it can take around four to six hours. You will be guided by park rangers as you climb from 6,525 feet to 11,382 feet – porters can be hired if needed. Children under twelve are not permitted.
